this is what i like to do in the morning. open my eyes, roll over, fill my lungs to the point of explosion with today’s air, then let it rush forth. past my teeth, tongue and lips back into the world. then, for about forty-five seconds, i lay there. without moving or even breathing, i lay there. relaxed as a hippopotamus resting in the water on a hot safari afternoon. the muscles holding my vertebrae together begin to let go, they elongate and allow my spine to stretch. curling my toes, tightening muscles from my calves to the base of my neck, oxygen floods my system. they tremble and shake, ecstatically thanking my lungs for the rush.
